Somerset–London Tornado (May 2025)

Somerset–London Tornado (May 2025)
On the night of May 16, 2025, a violent long-track tornado ran roughly sixty miles through Russell, Pulaski, and Laurel counties, striking Somerset and London. A federal disaster declaration followed within a week — and more than a year on, supplemental claims, repair disputes, and contractual suit windows are the live issues.

Claim windows for this event

Where key deadlines and windows connected to this event generally stand. Every policy is different — treat these as prompts to check your own policy, not conclusions.
Initial claim notice
KY
Likely passed

The first-notice window for a May 2025 loss has, in nearly all cases, passed. If a claim was never opened, that is a policy-and-record question that needs review before anything else.

Supplemental & reopened claims
KY
May remain open

More than a year on, this is the live center: storm-season repairs coming apart, scope gaps surfacing at final walkthroughs, and depreciation holdbacks never recovered. The policy's supplemental path may still be open — a dated record carries the request.

Suit-limitation clauses
KY
Varies by policy

Policies set their own windows for filing suit over a claim dispute, and at this distance from the loss those clauses deserve immediate attention. There is no single deadline — the window varies by policy; review promptly.

FEMA individual assistance
KY
Expired

FEMA individual assistance was available under DR-4875-KY in six counties after the May 2025 declaration; the application period closed August 22, 2025. That program's closure has no effect on insurance claims, which run on the policy's own terms — and FEMA aid never duplicated what insurance owed in the first place.

Matching on partial repairs
KY
Guidance

Partial roof and siding losses raise Kentucky's uniformity standard for repairs — scopes that keep materials reasonably uniform with what exists, rather than patchwork fixes. On a rebuild this extensive, uniformity disputes are common. The Kentucky matching guide is the deep-dive home.

Windows and deadlines vary by policy, endorsement, and claim history. Nothing here is legal advice about your specific deadline — if timing matters on your claim, have the policy reviewed promptly.

Start here — first steps on a claim from this event

If this event damaged your property, these steps protect the claim regardless of where it eventually goes.
  1. Pull the full claim file together — every estimate, payment, letter, and photo, in date order. A year on, the record is the claim.
  2. Walk the completed repairs critically: mismatched roof sections, siding that does not line up, and finishes that read as patchwork are supplemental-claim material, not settled history.
  3. Compare what was paid against what the rebuild actually cost — including depreciation that was never recovered after repairs finished.
  4. Check the policy's own window for filing suit over a dispute now, not later — timing rules vary by policy, and at this distance from the loss they deserve immediate attention.
  5. Before signing anything final — a release, a closing letter, a last check — get a policyholder-side review.
